Dear Alumni and Friends,
As we near the end of 2015, Chemistry is pleased to reflect and recognize the achievements and activities of our students and faculty over the last year. Our department continues to grow, and we welcomed 64 new graduate students this year. We also celebrated the 18 PhD and 16 MSc degrees awarded earlier this month.
In this issue of e-Distillations, we welcome new faculty member Prof. Sophie Rousseaux, and focus on the prominent awards granted to Prof. Mark Lautens, who has been named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and to Prof. Robert H. Morris and Prof. Jonathan Abbatt, who were granted Killam Fellowships in 2015. We also showcase community activities in the department, including the new Women in Chemistry initiative and efforts of Nadine Borduas, and remember Prof. Emeritus Anthony Poë. This is of course but a glimpse into the department over the last year. We have enjoyed numerous successes and are also proud to announce that among many other awards granted to faculty and students, Prof. Molly Shoichet was named the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science North American laureate for 2015, and Prof. Doug Stephan was named an Einstein Visiting Fellow.
Finally, Penny Ashcroft Moore, Manager of the Chair’s Office will be retiring at the end of December. Since joining us in 1994 she has overseen many aspects of Departmental life including, faculty hiring and tenure, awards, alumni relations, etc. Her passion and dedication to the Department are known to you all, and she has touched the lives of many individuals in our Chemistry family. We will feature Penny in the next issue of e-Distillations. For now please join me in congratulating her on her many accomplishments and wish her an enjoyable retirement.
I hope that you enjoy this issue of e-Distillations, and we look forward to bringing e-Distillations to you with more regularity in the coming year. We are always pleased to have the opportunity to connect with alumni, and in the interim, invite you to get in touch with feedback or comments at commoff@chem.utoronto.ca.
Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.
Best Regards,
Robert Batey
