2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award reception and dinner

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Melissa Kennedy LLB 1987, and Herb Solway, JD 1955, are the recipients of the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award for their outstanding professional and community achievements. Please join us on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the Jackman Law Building for a cocktail reception followed by dinner and awards presentation at the Faculty of Law. We will also be celebrating the remarkable 2017 Wilson-Prichard Awardees Michelle S. Henry, JD 2002 and Claire E. Hunter, JD 2003.

Phil Fontaine to receive honorary doctor of laws degree at Convocation

Larry Phillip (Phil) Fontaine, OC, OM, former three-term national chief of the Assembly of First nations and lead negotiator of the historic Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, will receive an honorary degree at the law school’s Convocation ceremony June 9, 2017 for his outstanding commitment to community service and advancing Indigenous rights.

Catherine Lacavera, JD/MBA 2001
Catherine Lacavera, JD/MBA 2001, to receive U of T honorary degree

Catherine Lacavera, JD/MBA 2001, director of IP and litigation at Google, will receive an honorary doctor of laws from the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in June. A volunteer on various advisory boards at the university, Lacavera is a three-time graduate of the University of Toronto. In addition to her law degree, she has a degree in computer engineering and an MBA.

Geoff Taber
Geoff Taber: 1960-2016, Class of 1985

Geoffrey Kenneth Taber, LLB 1985, his wife, Jacquie and sons Scott and Andrew, all of Toronto, perished tragically in a cottage fire on December 24, 2016. Geoff was a generous, vibrant and wonderful person, a talented lawyer and a great friend. The Faculty of Law and the Rotman School of Management would like to honour his legacy with the Geoff Taber Memorial Scholarship.

Hire a student: LAWS Summer Job Program 2017

Get involved in increasing legal profession diversity. Support the Faculty of Law's Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) program by employing a high school student or donating a student salary as part of its annual Summer Job Program (SJP). LAWS works closely with partner organizations to select and place students in one-month placements throughout the summer; while providing pre-employment and mid-summer workplace training.

As LAWS enters its 12th year of helping Toronto's youth, the program is looking for new partners to reach its goal of placing 120+ students in paid summer positions. More information can be found by clicking below or by emailing summerjobprogram2017@lawinaction.ca.

Nominations for 2017-18 Law Alumni Association Council

The purpose of the Law Alumni Association (LAA) is to promote the interests and activities of the Faculty of Law, the association and its members. This is a great way to get involved with your law school, and reconnect with classmates. For the 2017-18 academic year, we are seeking nominations for alumni who have graduated in the last 6-10 years. Each nominee is required to submit a personal statement of no more than 100 words outlining their qualifications for the position for which they are to be nominated. For more details on the nomination process, please visit law.utoronto.ca/events/AGM2017.

To submit a nomination, please download and print the nomination form (PDF). The nomination deadline is Friday, April 21, 2017 by 11:59 pm. All nominations are reviewed by the Nominating Committee and submitted for voting at the Law Alumni Association Annual General Meeting on May 1, 2017.
2017 U of T Arbor Awards: Call for nominations

The Arbor Awards were created by the University of Toronto to recognize volunteers for their outstanding personal service to the university. Since then, the university has annually acknowledged those alumni and friends whose loyalty, dedication and generosity have added immeasurably to the quality of the University of Toronto experience for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Individuals are nominated for the award, which can be granted for contributions to specific constituencies, or to the university at large. If you are interested in nominating an individual for a 2017 Arbor Award, please contact Wasila Baset, Associate Director, Alumni Programs, at wasila.baset@utoronto.ca or 416-946-8227. Nominations are due Friday, April 7, 2017, by 11:59 pm.
